Pizza Night at Santa Pizza

Friday March 19 we had our 2nd social for the year at Santa Pizza at Mallsport. It was a lovely warm evening up on the top floor exposed to the stars and the evening breeze. Below, we could hear the rush of water and watch the surfers and boogie-boarders having fun. The waiters kept bringing the delicious hors d’oeuvres and it was lovely to see the members chatting, laughing and making new friends. The barmen were busy mixing up mojitos, gin and tonics and serving local wines while music played softly into the night sky. We had a good turn out - a nice way to enjoy the tail end of summer. DELIVERY OF GEAR TO EARTHQUAKE EFFECTED AREAS.

Dear all, Thanks a lot again all of you for the super super help!! We got a lot, a lot of things together. A part of it went to Chica (for the village Curanipe ) and the rest of the things we got together went to the aurauco coastal area to Tirua and Isla Mocha. It all was delivered well and distributed well. For the people who understand spanish : please read the detailed story below by isabel, who went to deliver the things herself. It feels great for me to be part of the IAC with so many warmhearted people; all of you who came to help to deliver and sort out the bags of clothes last thursday at the IAC: Muchos muchos gracias!!!! Iris Cómo te había comentado telefónicamente, a través de este correo quiero enviar los detalles y registro de nuestro viaje a Tirúa. El viaje fue un éxito, finalmente logramos llegar con 3 camiones y 2 camionetas llenos de alimentos, abrigo, agua, remedios, carpas, cocinillas y gas. Casi llegando al destino, confirmó DHL, empresa de envío de encomiendas, que iba en camino con 50 camas, 50 catres y el resto de los alimentos destinados a Tirúa. Toda esta ayuda no habría sido posible sin la colaboración de una gran cantidad de personas y organizaciones que quisieron enviar ayuda a una de las zonas afectada por el terremoto y tsunami del 27 de febrero. La hora de partida fue a media noche del día viernes 05 de marzo, viajamos en caravana con gente de Pro- Chile, quienes a través de sus funcionarios lograron llenar una de las camionetas y un camión de la caravana. Fue un viaje largo y muy duro, la carretera muestra la intensidad del terremoto, muchos desvíos, sectores sin pavimento y grandes daños. Después de 15 horas de viaje llegamos a nuestro destino. A pesar de lo agotador, fue muy especial ver tantos camiones, autos y camionetas con mensajes como: “ánimo, levantémosno y fuerza Chile”, al mismo tiempo escuchando las bocinas para animarnos entre todos a llegar y ayudar a los que realmente lo necesitaban. El tiempo que logramos estar en Tirúa fue corto, pero intenso, logramos observar la intensidad del tsunami, un paisaje muy desolador, las personas con mucho susto y triste de ver su pueblo con una costa totalmente destrozada. El pueblo se encontraba sin agua, sin electricidad, sin señal telefónica, la municipalidad totalmente arrasada por el mar, la comisaría muy afectada por el terremoto, los bomberos y el internado de escoleres también afectados por el tsunami y el minimarket que abastece al pueblo totalmente destrozado y saqueado durante la noche del terremoto. Los camiones y camionetas fueron descargados en el Hogar de Cristo de Tirúa, donde los Jesuitas nos esperaban. La distribución ya estaba muy bien organizada, formaban canastas familiares similares para todas las familias del pueblo y comunidades indígenas, los mismos jesuitas la distribuían en las sedes comunitarias, donde cada familia iba a retirar la ayuda. De esta forma, nadie queda sin alimentos y abrigos. Además de distribuir la ayuda en el pueblo de Tirúa, los jesuitas enviaban ayuda a la Isla Mocha, lugar también bastante afectada por el tsunami, el envío de la ayuda la hacían por medio de una avioneta. Logramos notar que para que la distribución fuera lo más equitativa posible y para que llegara a todos, se necesita mucha ayuda y trabajo en equipo, tarea nada de fácil y además agotadoras para todos los encargados de coordinar y distribuir. A través de esta campaña, se logro mover el piso de otras zonas, como Valdivia y Temuco, los que también enviaron ayuda. Gracias a esto, por el momento ya no es necesario enviar más alimentos y abrigo, el apoyo sigue llegando de esas zonas. Por otro lado, el pueblo aún está muy asustado y triste al ver su estado, no te imaginas cómo son las réplica, tiempla constantemente durante el día y la noche. Aún así, la gente está comenzando a volver a sus casas, sólo las 60 familias que perdieron todo se mantienen en casa de familiares y algunos (pocos) en carpas. Las comunidades indígenas aledañas al pueblo están bien, prácticamente no les pasó nada, sólo el pueblo tiene daños significativos. El día miércoles 10 de marzo les llegó la comunicación a Tirúa, logré comunicarme con Pablo Castro, sacerdote jesuita, y hablar más extendido. Me confirmó que la ayuda en alimentos ya no es necesaria porque con nuestro viaje y además con las campañas de Valdivia y Temuco, se logró abastecer al pueblo completo. Desde ahora comienza el trabajo de mediano y largo plazo (levantamiento del pueblo). El día miércoles 10 de marzo hubo una reunión en Tirúa donde participaron: la municipalidad de Tirúa, Jesuitas (Pablo Castro), ONG Avina, Fao y Servicio País, para comenzar con el levantamiento del pueblo. Como verás, felizmente Tirúa se está reanimando, con la campaña realizada, se logró despertar a varias ONG y lo mejor es que está el ánimo de trabajar en conjunto y dirigirse por el mismo camino, para evitar intervenciones dispersas y trabajar bajo un sentido común. Antes de despedirme, quisiera comentarte que seguiré apoyando al pueblo de Tirúa. Mi apoyo ahora será ligado al área productiva, donde voy a apoyar a una agrupación de tejedoras mapuches Lavkenche de la zona, dueñas de una Asociación Indígena que comercializan textiles. Esta Asociación está conformada por casi 200 tejedoras, quienes a través de las ventas de sus tejidos logran mantener a sus familias. Su sede fue afectada por el tsunami y la gran preocupación que ahora tienen es que las ventas de sus textiles tradicionales se verá muy afectada por este terremoto. También sigo en contacto con una de las ONG que ayudo a que la campaña y el viaje a Tirúa resultara (Poloc, ubicada en Bilbao 2704A, lugar de acopio de la campaña), es la que te comentaba que está conformada por ex Servicios País, amigos míos, quienes seguirán apoyando a Tirúa y además están ayudados a otras zonas también afectada por esta catástrofe. Iris, agradezco la ayuda que tú y tus amigos enviaron a Tirúa, llegamos en el momento justo, logramos enviar toda la ayuda que llegó y fue distribuida a todas las familias del pueblo. DISCOVERING SANTIAGO FEBRUARY 2010

IAC members led by Kathy Bubb hopped aboard the Metro and arrived at the Cultural Center of the Palacio La Moneda February 23, 2010 to view the Bicentennial exhibition, La Antigua China y El Ejército de Terracota (Ancient China and the Terracota Warriors). The splendid exhibition included figures from the tomb of China's First Emperor, Qin Shihuang and many other wonderful artifacts. Arriving mid-morning, they were greeted with the pleasant surprise of being among the first 500 eligible for free entry to the museum. The exhibit, divided into two rooms, showcases artifacts from the Han Dynasty and the Qin Dynasty. At the time of their visit the exhibit did not offer translation in English though the center had plans to change that shortly with its newest guide. The exhibition offered expanded captions of its items along with child-friendly shorter captions for children. These proved helpful for those who were beginners in Spanish. After viewing the exhibit, members continued on to the other wonderful exhibits on display (including the richly elaborate costumes from the opera Turandot and the collective work of Chile's multi-talented Violeta Parra). Many lingered for lunch at the museum to marvel at what they experienced or opted to explore the surrounding area. The exhibit is available through the end of May, Monday through Sunday 9:00 AM to 8:30 PM. Fridays the exhibit is open 24 hours.Click here to view photos of the trip.

DISCOVERING SANTIAGO NOVEMBER

16 of us gathered at the Providencia Tourist Center and caught the yellow double-decker bus for a two-hour tour around Providencia. We made stops at the Japanese Garden, the Sculpture Park and Mapulemu Gardens, with sections on all of the different flora found throughout Chile. We don't recommend the coffee (!) but otherwise had a fabulous time together.

DISCOVERING SANTIAGO SEPTEMBER

An eager group of 14 met this last Tuesday at Metro El Golf to go on a Discover Santiago adventure led by our wonderful guide, Maria Jose Herrera. MJ had clearly done her research, having gone down to the barrio the week before and also downloaded several pages of notes. It was a beautiful day weather-wise and included a stop for coffee at Cafe Observatorio, so named because when it was built 100 years ago, its three-story structure stood above all the surrounding one-story buildings. BLOOD DONATIONS at the IAC HOUSE

I want to thank everyone who was able to give blood at the IAC house today.
We had 26 people who came, of whom 24 could give blood. Organizacion
Humaniza did an outstanding job of organizing the day. Their staff and
volunteers were very friendly yet quite professional. We had a few
first-time givers who said that the experience was much better than they had
imagined! Our next Blood Draw will be in March 2010 - we hope for an even
bigger turnout. For more information about how you can give blood (if you

MAY DAY TRIP - BARRIO BRAZIL WALKING TOUR

 

Discovering Santiago Day Trip to Barrio Brasil and Barrio Yungay was a huge success with a turnout of over 30 + people. The lunch at La Peluqueria Frances was also wonderful with a total of 28 happy attendees. To view photos of the day, click here.

 

SCULPTURE PARK OUTING - GREAT FUN!

Thirteen of us walked from Cafe Melba's to the Scuplture Park on Andres Bello and enjoyed the sights and sounds of the city along the way. Once in the park we toured the grounds and small museum, marvelling at the variety of pieces of art that were present. We even learned a bit about the trees in the area!

 

 

MEET AND GREET - OLD FRIENDS AND NEW!

A great group met on Friday, March 27 for socializing at the IAC House. There was plenty of wine and lots of great appetizers. Carolyn Lee put together a blind wine tasting for us, as well as a wine quiz. Many people said how nice it was to be able to mix and mingle, talking with lots of different people in such a pleasant (and inexpensive!) setting.

January 27 - House Dedication

The house dedication was a big success. Many members came and enjoyed a relaxed morning, chatting. A temporary IAC House number was revealed, while a permanent one is being sourced.
